The goal of FairDeDup is to reduce social biases in AI systems by implementing fair deduplication. Deduplication involves removing redundant information from the training data, which helps to lower the high computing costs associated with training AI systems. FairDeDup works by thinning datasets of image captions collected from the web through a process known as pruning. This method allows for informed decisions about which parts of the data to keep and which to remove, based on controllable, human-defined dimensions of diversity.

While previous research has shown that removing redundant data can lead to more accurate AI training with fewer resources, it can also exacerbate harmful social biases that AI systems often learn. By incorporating fairness considerations into the deduplication process, FairDeDup aims to mitigate biases related to occupation, race, gender, age, geography, and culture. This approach not only improves the cost-effectiveness and accuracy of AI training but also promotes social justice and fairness in AI systems.

One of the key points raised by Eric Slyman is the importance of letting stakeholders define what is fair in their setting. Instead of relying on large-scale datasets or the internet to determine fairness, FairDeDup empowers users to shape how AI systems behave in their specific contexts.
