After experiencing helium leaks and thruster problems with Boeing’s Starliner capsule, NASA has found themselves in a position where they have had to continuously postpone the return date of the two astronauts from the International Space Station. The return was initially planned for Wednesday, June 26th, but has since been canceled due to conflicting timelines with scheduled spacewalks on the ISS. Instead of rushing the return, NASA has decided to keep testing the capsule, aiming to fully understand the underlying issues and implement any necessary fixes.
The Starliner capsule faced multiple technical challenges during its journey to the ISS, including the failure of two thrusters and the detection of five small leaks on the service module. Despite these setbacks, the spacecraft managed to deliver 227 kg (500 lbs) of cargo to the station. The crew and ground teams have been diligently working through safety checks, ensuring that all necessary procedures are followed to address the technical issues.
Mission Objectives
The primary objective of this mission was to validate the Starliner spacecraft as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, with the goal of having it work in conjunction with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon for regular cargo and crew deliveries to the ISS. This mission marked the second visit of the Starliner to the ISS and the third overall flight test. The first uncrewed test flight in December 2019 was unsuccessful in reaching the ISS, but after implementing 61 corrective actions, a second attempt was made on May 22nd, 2022, which successfully docked to the station.
Despite the challenges faced by the Starliner capsule, it is reported to be performing well while docked to the space station. The astronauts are currently assisting with station operations and completing add-on in-flight objectives for the certification of Starliner. NASA officials have stated that they will conduct a thorough review to evaluate future return opportunities for the Starliner capsule.
