In a world where the fashion industry is heavily criticized for its environmental impact, particularly the denim industry, researchers have been exploring innovative solutions to address the issue. One such solution that has recently garnered attention is the use of a new dye called Indican. This colorless compound, derived from indigo-producing plants, has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental and societal impacts associated with dyeing jeans.

Traditional synthetic indigo dyeing processes require toxic chemicals, large quantities of water, and are linked to substantial carbon dioxide emissions. However, the use of Indican could potentially reduce these negative impacts by up to 90 percent. The researchers behind this groundbreaking study have engineered a variant of an enzyme found in indigo-producing plants that can produce Indican on an industrial scale. This new dye does not require the use of strong chemicals, making it a more sustainable alternative to conventional indigo dye.

By dissolving Indican in water and activating it with either an enzyme or exposure to light, the dyeing process becomes more environmentally friendly. The study found that light-driven dyeing using Indican could reduce the environmental damage of traditional indigo dyeing by 73 percent, while enzyme-activated dyeing could slash the impacts by up to 92 percent. The end result is the same classic blue jean color that consumers love, but with significantly fewer negative environmental consequences.

If Indican were to replace synthetic indigo in dyeing the nearly four billion jeans traded annually, there could be a significant reduction in the production of toxic waste and global CO2 emissions. While there are still some limitations to consider, such as the use of polluting petrochemicals in the production of Indican and the slightly higher cost compared to traditional dye, the growing demand for sustainable clothing could make Indican a commercially viable option in the future.
