Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our daily lives, with AI tools shaping our interactions and perceptions in various ways. However, a recent report led by researchers from UCL brings to light a troubling reality – the prevalence of gender bias in popular AI models. The study commissioned by UNESCO examined Large Language Models (LLMs), such as Open AI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-2, and META’s Llama 2, revealing discriminatory behavior against women and individuals from different cultures and sexualities.

The findings of the report highlighted disturbing instances of gender bias in AI-generated content. Female names were consistently associated with words like “family,” “children,” and “husband,” reinforcing traditional gender roles. On the other hand, male names were linked to words like “career,” “executives,” and “business,” perpetuating societal stereotypes. Moreover, the study uncovered negative stereotypes based on culture or sexuality, further deepening the discriminatory nature of AI-generated text.

Analyzing the diversity of content in AI-generated texts proved to be enlightening. The study revealed that Open-source LLMs tended to assign high-status jobs to men, such as “engineer” or “doctor,” while women were often relegated to undervalued roles like “domestic servant” or “prostitute.” Stories surrounding boys and men were filled with themes of adventure and decision-making, while narratives involving women focused on themes like “love,” “gentle,” and “husband.” This imbalance in portrayal not only reflects existing gender disparities but also perpetuates them in the digital realm.

Dr. Maria Perez Ortiz, an author of the report, emphasized the urgent need for an ethical overhaul in AI development. She highlighted the importance of creating AI systems that celebrate human diversity and promote gender equality. The report’s call to action extends beyond academia, urging tech organizations, policymakers, and AI developers to address the deeply ingrained biases within AI models.

The UNESCO Chair in AI at UCL team is poised to collaborate with UNESCO to raise awareness of the gender bias problem and facilitate solution development. By organizing workshops and events involving AI scientists, developers, and policymakers, the team aims to foster dialogue and drive progress towards more inclusive and ethical AI technologies. Professor John Shawe-Taylor, lead author of the report, emphasized the need for a global effort to combat AI-induced gender biases and promote human rights and gender equity in AI development.

The revelations brought forth by the report on gender bias in AI serve as a wake-up call for the tech industry and society as a whole. Addressing these biases requires a collective effort to ensure that AI technologies reflect the diverse tapestry of human experiences.
