The study’s lead biochemist, Gino Cortopassi, suggests that the ketogenic diet, and BHB specifically, may delay the progression of mild cognitive impairment to full-blown Alzheimer’s disease. By improving synaptic function and neural connectivity, BHB could potentially mitigate memory problems associated with Alzheimer’s.

Interestingly, the study also found that the ketogenic diet produced more BHB in female mice and seemed to benefit them more. This gender difference in response to the diet raises important questions about the role of gender in Alzheimer’s risk. Cortopassi highlights the significance of these results for females, especially those with the ApoE4 gene variant, who are at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s.

While the study’s findings are promising, they also raise concerns about the long-term health implications of ketogenic diets. High levels of ketones, such as those produced by the diet, are associated with potential health risks. Scientists are unsure about the overall benefits of ketogenic diets for general health, especially over extended periods.
