Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have become increasingly popular in the world of generative AI. However, a recent study by researchers at University College London has uncovered some concerning findings regarding the rational reasoning abilities of these LLMs. The ability of these AIs to produce text, images, audio, and video has raised questions about their reliability in tasks involving decision-making.

The study conducted by UCL researchers focused on testing the rational reasoning capabilities of seven different LLMs. The models were subjected to a battery of 12 cognitive psychology tests, including the Wason task, the Linda problem, and the Monty Hall problem. The results revealed that the models often provided varying responses when asked the same question multiple times, indicating a lack of consistency in their reasoning.

Despite the sophistication of these LLMs, the study found that they were prone to making simple mistakes such as basic addition errors and mistaking consonants for vowels. For example, some models incorrectly answered the Wason task due to misconceptions about vowels. While humans also struggle with these cognitive tasks, the study highlighted significant discrepancies in the reasoning abilities of LLMs.

Insights from the Study

Olivia Macmillan-Scott, the first author of the study, pointed out that large language models do not think like humans yet. While some models performed better than others, there is still a long way to go in terms of mimicking human reasoning. The closed nature of these models raises questions about their reasoning process and the possibility of unknown tools influencing their responses.

Ethical Considerations and Additional Context

Interestingly, some models declined to answer certain tasks on ethical grounds, despite the innocence of the questions. This behavior was attributed to safeguarding parameters within the models. Providing additional context for the tasks did not lead to consistent improvements in the models’ responses, indicating a lack of adaptability in their reasoning process.

Professor Mirco Musolesi, the senior author of the study, highlighted the surprising capabilities of these models and the challenges in understanding their emergent behavior. He raised important questions about the implications of fine-tuning these models to rectify their flaws. The study prompts a reflection on the nature of rationality in AI and whether we strive for perfection or accept the flaws inherent in human reasoning.
