Imagine the thrill of returning to Earth inside a space capsule. Varda Space Industries’ small W-1 spacecraft did just that, successfully landing at the Utah Test and Training Range on February 21, 2024. The entire reentry sequence was captured on camera, showcasing the separation from the satellite bus in low Earth orbit (LEO), the fiery descent through Earth’s atmosphere, the parachute deployment, and the bouncy landing. The W-1 spacecraft, which was part of a Rocket Lab Photon spacecraft launched in June 2023 on SpaceX’s Transporter-8 rideshare mission, was used by Varda to test their in-space manufacturing technologies. Inside the capsule, the company was able to produce crystals of ritonavir, an antiviral drug used to treat HIV and hepatitis C. The microgravity environment of LEO allowed for the creation of medicines that would be impossible to produce on Earth. Varda’s CEO, Will Bruey, emphasized the significance of removing gravity as a parameter in the manufacturing process, opening up new possibilities in pharmaceutical development.

Achievements and Collaboration

The integration of W-1 with the Rocket Lab Photon spacecraft, which provided power, propulsion, and navigation for the capsule, was a remarkable achievement. The successful demonstration of in-space manufacturing and the return of the capsule with the finished pharmaceutical product on the first attempt showcased the teamwork between the Rocket Lab and Varda teams. Rocketlab CEO Peter Beck commended the mission as a phenomenal feat and highlighted its potential impact on future reentry missions, including developments for human spaceflight missions.

Following the reentry, Varda transported the capsule to their California headquarters for a thorough check-out. The ritonavir samples produced in space were sent to a pharmaceutical company, Improved Pharma, for analysis. Additionally, Varda plans to share data from the reentry with NASA and the Air Force under a contract with these agencies, further contributing to the advancement of space exploration and research.
