A recent study conducted on a group of almost 50,000 older nurses in the US has suggested that adopting an attitude of gratitude can actually lead to extra years at the end of one’s life. The participants in the study, who had an average age of 79, were asked to evaluate their level of gratitude for everything in their lives. The results showed that those who scored highest on the gratitude scale were around 9 percent less likely to have died over a three year period. The data was adjusted for sociodemographic details, health history, and lifestyle choices, but there could be other variables influencing the results. A meta-analysis conducted in 2020 found that gratitude interventions had limited benefits for individuals struggling with anxiety and depression. However, deliberate acts of gratitude, such as writing down things we are grateful for, have shown to be beneficial for some individuals.

The research team behind the study is now looking to further investigate the relationship between gratitude and mortality in a larger and more diverse group of individuals. Understanding the role of gratitude as a psychological resource for enhancing longevity could have significant implications for public health and healthy aging initiatives.
