Vaping has gained popularity as a supposed alternative to traditional smoking, with 4.5 million individuals in the UK now using e-cigarettes regularly. However, the long-term health impacts of vaping, especially for younger generations who have never smoked before, remain largely unknown. Flavored vapes, which are particularly attractive to young users, serve as a common entry point into vaping. In an effort to understand the health implications of flavored vapes, a research project was conducted using artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the chemical changes that occur when vaping.

The study revealed that heating e-liquid flavor chemicals in vaping devices leads to the formation of numerous potentially harmful substances. An AI neural network model was used to simulate the effects of heating e-liquid flavor chemicals found in nicotine vapes. The research predicted the creation of hazardous chemicals, including those classified as “acute toxic”, “health hazards”, and “irritants”. Of particular concern were volatile carbonyls (VCs), known for their negative health effects, which were predicted to form in fruit, candy, and dessert-flavored products popular among young vapers.

The study highlighted a different profile of chemical hazards associated with vaping compared to traditional tobacco smoking. There is a growing concern that prolonged exposure to these hazardous chemicals could lead to the emergence of new chronic diseases 15 to 20 years down the line. The vast variety of flavors available in vaping products, comprised of over 180 different chemicals, poses a significant challenge when it comes to understanding their chemistry. These chemicals, originally intended for use in food products, were not meant to be heated to high temperatures for inhalation. The lack of uniformity in vaping devices and temperature control further complicates the issue, increasing the unpredictability of potential health risks.

The study underscores the urgent need for comprehensive regulations on the ingredients used in vapes, including those that are nicotine-free. Policymakers should mandate that sellers of these products substantiate their safety claims, particularly when targeting non-tobacco smokers. As vaping continues to rise in popularity, the integration of technology and AI can provide valuable insights into the future health consequences faced by vapers. By shedding light on the chemical transformations in flavored vapes, researchers aim to inform public health policies that accurately reflect the risks associated with vaping, empowering users to make informed choices.

It is crucial to learn from past mistakes and ensure that individuals are not misled about the safety of vaping, much like previous generations were misled about smoking. Utilizing AI and advanced technology can divert us from repeating history and equip us with the knowledge needed to prevent further health complications associated with vaping. As research continues to uncover the unknown health impacts of vaping, it is imperative that regulatory bodies take swift and decisive action to protect public health.
