Stars are as diverse as the people on Earth, ranging from stable yellow-white stars like our Sun to massive, short-lived behemoths, and small, dim red dwarfs. Among these celestial beings are ultracool dwarfs, which are slightly larger than Jupiter and very cool by star standards. Recently, astronomers discovered an Earth-sized exoplanet orbiting an ultracool dwarf named SPECULOOS-3 located just 55 light-years away. This exoplanet, named SPECULOOS-3b, is intriguing due to its close orbit and unique characteristics.

SPECULOOS-3b, being similar in size to Earth, has a year lasting just 17 hours with days and nights that never end. Astronomer Michaël Gillon from the University of Liège in Belgium suggests that the planet likely rotates synchronously, always facing the star on one side and being engulfed in darkness on the other. This exoplanet was discovered utilizing transits, which are faint dips in the star’s light as the planet passes in front of it. Through these measurements, Gillon and his team were able to ascertain some of the physical properties of SPECULOOS-3b.

Despite its Earth-like size, SPECULOOS-3b is unlikely to be habitable due to the harsh conditions it faces. The ultracool dwarf star around which it orbits is known for frequent flares, exposing the exoplanet to intense radiation levels. Additionally, the proximity of SPECULOOS-3b to the star makes it a challenging environment for hosting life. However, the lack of an atmosphere on the exoplanet could provide valuable insights for scientists studying ultra-cool dwarf stars and their potential habitable planets.

SPECULOOS-3b adds to the growing list of exoplanets discovered around ultracool dwarf stars. Notable examples include the TRAPPIST-1 system with seven exoplanets, discovered using the SPECULOOS prototype. This discovery highlights the capabilities of the telescope network in identifying planets orbiting small stars. Future endeavors involving the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) aim to provide more detailed information about SPECULOOS-3b, such as its mass, density, and mineral composition.

The discovery of SPECULOOS-3b sheds light on the fascinating world of ultracool dwarf stars and their planetary systems. While this Earth-sized exoplanet may not be habitable, it presents a unique opportunity for further exploration and scientific research.
